Air transport in France and Europe: things to take into account

    • 80% of air freight in Europe is also transported by truck to or from an airport.
    • The main airport hubs for merchandise in Europe are Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle (CDG), Frankfurt (FRA), Luxembourg (LUX), Brussels (BRU) and Amsterdam (AMS). Paris (Roissy et Orly) is the No.1 airport hub in Europe for air freight.
    • Safety measures are ultra-strict, 100% of air cargo is checked (X-ray, specialised customs staff & dogs or other suitable means.)

By enlisting MATHEZ FREIGHT, you'll benefit from the speed and security we have acquired as an AEO-Full freight agent with a presence at the main airports in France.

Can we transport special or dangerous products by air?

What we commonly call "dangerous goods" are products that contain substances which may prove dangerous when it comes to air transport. Compliance with a specific regulation is required to package, handle, and declare them correctly so they can be transported without risk to the cargo plane and its occupants.

There are 9 classes of special products (DGRs): explosives, gas, inflammable liquids, inflammable solids, combustible materials, toxic and infectious materials, radioactive materials, corrosive materials and dangerous merchandise various. Many chemicals and pharmaceuticals fall into these categories. These materials or articles are regulated because they pose a potential risk to the health and safety of people, infrastructure and/or their means of transport.

Air transport of dangerous goods is governed by the IATA regulations for the transport of dangerous goods (Dangerous Goods Regulations or DGR) and other national and international regulations. Freight forwarders and freight agents, packagers, packers and others involved in the preparation and transport of dangerous goods by air must comply with these regulations and undergo regular training to ensure that their shipments are compliant so that they can be handled quickly and easily by the airlines.

MATHEZ FREIGHT agencies are equipped to handle the shipment of your dangerous merchandise by air because they have the required accreditations, as well as trained and authorized personnel.

Can we transport lithium batteries by plane?

Whether it's a mobile phone, an electric bicycle, children's toy, or a laptop computer, a wide variety of products today contain lithium batteries.

However, several fires that started in aeroplane holds, caused by Lithium batteries have lead the air freight safety authorities to impose a set of rules to prevent any issues caused by a flashover when there are shocks, assembly issues or a strong temperature increase during transportation.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has listed specific standards for transporting lithium batteries. Every air transport company has adopted these norms by applying its own definitions and restrictions, and some destinations require specific measures in terms of packaging and handling.

The conditions for transporting batteries may also vary according to the size of the batteries, their Watt/Hour power in some cases (ionic lithium, polymer, iron phosphate type batteries (Life PO4), etc.) or their lithium content measured in grams in other cases (metal lithium batteries, lithium alloy batteries, etc.). Damaged or defective devices or lithium batteries are generally banned from transport.
All of these restrictions frequently change (almost every 4 months).

We are here to advise you on options for shipping or importing lithium batteries by air transport. Please provide us with the following information: the type of battery and its power, the number of batteries you wish to ship and the desired route, and we will reply with the shipping option available either by air or, if not, land or sea. Why choose an air freight agent that's IATA and AEO-Full certified?

IATA certification is essential for shipping cargo internationally as it standardizes certain procedures between airlines and freight agents and makes them secure.

Accreditation as an "AEO" (Authorized Economic Operator) is granted by the EU customs administrations to companies that meet strict customs criteria and demonstrate consistent quality, conformity and reliability in the international supply chain. Working with an "AEO-Full" forwarder gives you, as a consignor, the following benefits:

    • Simplifying your customs operations,
    • Physical and records inspections are reduced and adapted to your goods,
    • Status recognized throughout the European Union and worldwide.
"AEO-Full" accreditation will be very appreciated by your foreign customers or buyers.

MATHEZ FREIGHT is among the top 30 of IATA agents in France, and since 2013 it has benefitted from AEO-Full status, including the "simplified customs" AEO-C certificate and the "safety-security" AEO-S certificate. When working with MATHEZ FREIGHT, you can be assured that all your customs transactions across the EU and beyond will be carried out with precision, reliability and professionalism, according to the highest standards.
